Your Questions About Exercising

Sandy asks…

How much weight can I lose eating 1000 calories a day & exercising?

I weight about 155 but want to be around 125-30. Is it possible for me to lose weight on a steady pace by eating 1000 calories a day and exercising up to an hour a day 4-5 days a week?

imstayin answers:

Yes, all depends on how many calories u burn during ur workout, its very simple math…. Also, after the first week or so, ur body will resist losing any more weight, just keep on pushin through.

Laura asks…

My Dr banned my exercising due to injuries from a wreck. What can I do to still lose weight?

I already diet, and I’ve lost about 6 pounds, but I know without exercising my weight loss will be hindered. The injuries are in my knee, neck and tailbone.

imstayin answers:

That’s really hard to say since those injuries occur across the full scope of your body. To continue losing weight, an even more significant diet change is recommended. Of course, this can easily become unhealthy, so proceeed with caution. Depending on your knee injury, I would suggest walking for an hour or so a day. There are plenty of benefits with that, including weightloss. Yoga is another more alternative source for weight loss. It helps the body function better as a whole and with more, shall I say, coherence and efficiency and aids in the loss of weight. Water aerobics is a good idea, since it greatly reduces your weight and the amount of stress and tension put on joints. Other than that, I can’t think of much other advice other than to simply maintain your current weight and wait until your body heals to continue your normal routine.

John asks…

How do you keep motivated to keep exercising when you have a period?

How do you keep motivated to keep exercising when you have a period?

I know it’s a slightly odd question, but when I have a period I tend to feel lethargic and want to curl up for the first few days, and I get quite bad cramps too. But I’m on a mission to loose weight and need to keep my exercise up (I also know if I take a day off I’ll stop altogether!)

So what keeps you going, or what do you do differently when/if you have these problems? Or what can you suggest to keep me going even though I want to sleep and I’m in pain?!

Have a good day ^.^
XxxxxxxxxxxxX

imstayin answers:

Just knowing that moving around helps the cramps gets me to at least go for a walk. I get bad cramps for the first 2 to 3 days too. Sometimes if I don’t do anything that first day I wont go at all for another few days so I just have to KEEP moving. Don’t lst the pain get me down. GOod luck on your weight loss mission! (I have lost 12.6lbs in 13 weeks)I am on weight watchers. I could have lost more but I didn’t WOrk very hard at it So I know I can stick to this plan for life.

Ruth asks…

After quitting smoking how long shall i give it before i start exercising?

Just quitting smoking day two now, but last time i quit i had shortness of breath anxiety, all of that, and it lasted for at least 3 months. Is this a sign that i should give it a while before i start exercising? Also how long do withdrawal symptoms last…

imstayin answers:

Absolutely nothing. You can begin exercising even before quitting·

Richard asks…

If I start exercising should i eat more calories?

I’ve been in a strict diet and lost about 15 pounds in less than a month, but now I just want to do exercise. I know if I stay with the diet and exercise I’ll be fragile…
What should I be eating or how many calories should I consume if I start exercising?
Thanks! (:

imstayin answers:

This is unhealthy! 15 pounds in one month?!?!
Just eat three meals a day. Not more, not less.

Lizzie asks…

How to transfer fat from stomach to legs by exercising?

I am curious to know if it is possible to exercise your fat to another area of your body. I am skinny but anytime I gain a little weight it goes directly to my stomach and wanted to know if there is way to use certain exercise techniques to help move the fat in to another part of the body rather than exercising to get rid of the fat.

imstayin answers:

Nope. It’s not possible. You have no control over where you body deposits fat. That is genetically determined. If you want larger legs you can do weight lifting exercises like squats. Also, the machine at the gym where you lay on your back with your legs up in the air and lift the weight up and down with your feet- that machine will significantly increase the size of your thighs if you use heavy enough weights, which would be a weight you could only lift 8-10 times before fatigue.

Charles asks…

How can i loose some weight without exercising or taking any pills?

I have tried both exercising and taking weight loss pills to loose weight. I dont exercise enough and im not motivated to work out, and taking pills just doesnt seem like a healthy option. I figure i can change my diet, but i dont really know where to start. Help me please! im fat!

imstayin answers:

Keep your calories at 1200 per day or less, and make them healthier: whole grains, lean protein, lots of fruits and veggies, less sugar, no trans fats, no high fructose corn syrup. Try not to drink sodas or sugary drinks. And even if you’re not motivated to work out, try to add some small amount of movement to your life: walking around for 20 minutes, swimming, etc. Start small and see if it makes a difference. Good luck!

Laura asks…

Will I lose weight at a faster rate if I start exercising morning AND night?

I eat approximately 1400 calories a day. I run on my treadmill for 30 minutes every morning. I’ve already lost 30 lbs, but it took such a long time. I realllly want to lose about 20 more… will exercising for 30 minutes more at night help in any way?

imstayin answers:

If you exercise 30 minutes more a day and eat the same number of calories, then you will lose weight faster. One thing you might consider instead of the treadmill is weights. If you build more muscle mass you will burn more calories throughout the day.

Mandy asks…

Why do i get an itchy feeling inside my muscles after exercising?

I’ve noticed that i sometimes get this itchy feeling inside my muscles after exercising or playing sports. (Not all the time) For instance say i ran or played some sports i would get that feeling in my legs. It feels better when i punch or massage it. Is this normal and what can i do to relieve this feeling?
I’ve noticed that i sometimes get this itchy feeling inside my muscles after exercising or playing sports. (Not all the time) It feels much different from being sore. For instance say i ran or played some sports i would get that feeling in my legs. It feels better when i punch or massage it. Is this normal and what can i do to relieve this feeling?

imstayin answers:

Drink more water…your muscles need to be able to flush out the toxins…this is normal…part of that itchy feeling is the blood flow into areas that normally do not get that much…again it is perfectly normal…

Your Questions About Exercising

Nancy asks…

How can i lose weight in a couple of months without exercising because i broke my leg?

I want to lose weight about 10 pounds. How can i lose weight (about 10 pounds) in a couple of months without exercising because of my leg.

imstayin answers:

The thing about breaking bones is that it puts a lot of stress on the rest of your body. Your normal routine will become a workout. Your arms, if using crutches, so if you’re in a wheelchair ditch it, will be sore from stairs, walking, and any movement. Your undamaged leg will become stronger if you do not put all of your body weight on your arms, you’ll notice this when your hands and wrists become sore. It generally adjusts by itself, as your weight redistributes, however, if it does not you have to learn how to put less pressure on your arms. Other than that, eat healthy and avoid fatty foods (weight gain will be more noticeable in the broken leg after the cast is removed).

Michael asks…

Is it easier to lose weight by changing my diet or by exercising?

I’ve got a few pounds that I want to lose. My will power is pretty weak when it comes to dieting and exercising and based on past experience I really don’t think I could do both at the same time and stick to it. What I’d like to do is start an exercise regime first and then gradually develop a healthier diet. For me, exercising is way easier to do than eating right. So, would my plan work? Would it be better to try changing my diet first then incorporate exercise?

imstayin answers:

Drink a glass of water before you put any thing solid in your mouth to eat. Just do that. If your stomach is full it is full it does not know any batter food or water. This will take care of the so call ‘Will Power”.

Exercise in your case is much batter so do that. Read all this for info only and do as you please.
***********************************************
It is up to you.

Slower the batter.

Read this and enjoy the change by doing the best thing for you that fits your life style.
**********************
Get going, buy a book called Mayo Clinic Diet and use it. Do not be miss lead diet means not starving but eating right amount of food, and right type of food. It may or may not be more then you are use to eating. The trick is to adjust the thing to fit your life style.
**************************************…
Body parts specific exercises and total body work out.

Read all this and make your own program. Then stick to it, change it as needed but must have one to follow.

Try, try, try. Do not give up.
**************************************…
You will need few other measurement such as Need to put in the info on wrist size, measure “Fat Index”, ——,——-,—.

Use this link.

Most of it may not apply but is suggested reading only. For lots of solidified fat around the upper abdomen and tummy:

Include total body work out too, so this fat may not migrate to other locations.

Learn the yoga by joining classes, and then at the end you can do it right at home. Then there is a Q? Of affordability. But there are books in the library and there may be lot to learn free of charge on the net.

Gym again is the Q? Of time and affordability. Time it takes to go to gym can be utilised to do exercise at home.

Best thing is to use both diet and exercises to reduce this extra weight and the fat.

If you spend on gym and yoga classes then it is an added incentive to not to waste it. Spend it if you can afford it. You need to be inventive, Gallon jug filled with water is 7 lbs, so you can use two jugs as weights in each hand. A one pound can of soup or vegetables fits nicely in most people’s palm too, and make very nice light weights for exercising the arms.

Most program fail because they are made by other people, so after acquiring the knowledge make your own program up and write it down then do it if need be modify it as you see fit but do not give up try, try, again and again. You will feel good about it and feel very healthy.

If still growing, so grow grace fully. Doing some Body parts specific weight free, free hand exercises can do wonders for biceps and triceps.

Same for abs, do abdominal and side bends and front bends and even back bends.

When you get going on biceps and triceps, you will have enough strength to do pull up and chin ups. Bicycling can save time and if possible swim in a safe place or in a pool ii it is convenient.

In the mean time just hang from your hand and just keep trying one day you will be able to pull yourself up. Then try chin ups, and slowly add a one more every few days.

All this is found on the Net and in the library, so read up on it and do it correctly so you that you may not get hurt.

Must drink 1 gallon of water per day.

Eat right, include all food groups per this site above. Do not exceed the total calories per day and eat at least 1500 calories per day every day. One pound of fat is about 3500 calories. You must sleep up to 7 to 9 hours a day time permitting and including naps.

Go for a walk every day for 1 hour, around your residence, start slowly (5 minute), to warm up then increase the speed a little till you can maintain a good clip then slow down to cool off (5 minute before the end of 1 hour). Do the walking in one direction for about 30 minutes then return home, may take little longer.

Or look up total body weight free free hand exercises and do them for 1 hour every day. You find them in the library and on the Internet. They can be done at home does not need gym.

James asks…

Why do I get bloated whenever I eat then immediately start exercising?

I don’t mean strenuous real exercising but like walking and moving around a lot instead of being sedentary. I then feel really hot in my stomach usually after and during whatever I’m doing. Sometimes this bloated feeling stays for a little while but sometimes stays for a long time like today cos then I slept after.

I’m a girl btw if that makes a difference and I’m using my brother’s Y!A

imstayin answers:

When you do the exercise the blood flows more to the exercising organs, so your digestive system gets less blood flow. This may be the reason. Why do you exercise immediately after you eat?
A slow walk after your food is not harmful.

John asks…

Can I lose weight by eating 700 calories a day and exercising for 2 hours five days a week?

I’ve been eating 600-700 calories a day and exercising for about 2 hours 5 days a week; I don’t know if this is healthy or not so I could use a little advice I guess?
And by doing this how much weight could I expect to lose?

imstayin answers:

1500 calories a day is recommended but it’s completely up to you the amount of calories you eat in day you will definitely see results from eating 600-700 calories a day and exercising 2 hours 5 day’s a week i think you would roughly lose around 2lb-3lb a week so within a month you would probably have lost just under a stone or maybe even a stone

Your Questions About Exercising

Ken asks…

Do you find that you menstruate heavier when strenuously exercising, such as in running?

I am 46 years old, peri-menopausal, and I seriously hate exercising when I am menstruating. But it seems that I bleed so much heavier when exercising. Is this normal? Or, should I avoid exercise for the week I am like this? Thanks for your help.

imstayin answers:

Hello Observer,

Excercise is very good, no matter what time of the month it is. You will find you bleed more while exercising, but you may also find that your period is shorter, at least that is my experience. I don’t love exercise but I have found it assists with the crampy feelings.

Swimming and walking are beneficial and you may find some relief doing so.

I wish you well. :)

Mark asks…

How can I start exercising more?

I’m 13 years old and most of my day is spent playing video games. I want to start exercising more but the problem is that there’s so much more interesting stuff to do. Also, if I try to do some sort of limitation system, I always end up forgetting about it in about a week.

imstayin answers:

Ok I’m also 13 and i had the same problem, what i did was : make a schedule for every week, i recommend that you exercise every other day, start with like 10 minutes daily and then start adding some more minutes every week, and for the video game problem, play the video games like for a treat you what i mean, when you have finish working out play video games, keep that in mind don’t play video games until you had your workout, do it for 1 month and you will be use to it and it will be part of your routine, good luck, hope i helped.
Also if this does not work, keep a rubber band in your wrist, every time you forget to workout, or you are playing video games at the wrong time pull the rubber band hard enough that you will feel the pain, don’t do it very hard you will look like an emo.

What is the best way to lose weight without dieting or exercising?

I have tried exercising and dieting, and I give up if I don’t see a difference, I know it won’t be instant, but I just want to know if there are any more ways of losing weight. I am tall for my age and weigh 9 stone and 1 pound :L

imstayin answers:

Not possible. If your not dedicated to losing weight then the only thing going to happen is your going to gain more! Whenever you feel like giving up just think of how your body will look when your all finished. I also like to think of proving everyone who doubted me wrong. Jist stay focused and dont have any cheat meals. Try to have 8 small meals a day instead of 3 large meals. This keeps your metabolism working all day helping you lose weight. Hope this helps!

Your Questions About Exercising

Sharon asks…

How can I lose weight without exercising?

I suffered a back injury. It is continuous and anytime I try to exercise my SI joint and L4/L5 are effected and I end up on my back again. It is a vicious cycle and I want to lose weight and tone up. Anybody have any recommendations on what I can do to lose weight without exercising?

imstayin answers:

To lose weight (fat) you must consume fewer calories a day than you burn…so your primary method would be to drop your calories (do not go below 1200 per day). Weight loss will be slower for you, but it can happen…if you can swim or do any form of water aerobics or activity that wouldn’t stress your back, that might be an option to help you burn extra calories without aggravating your injury…also possibly a recumbent bike (stationary) as it would have you in a position to help your back relax (slightly reclined)…

If you have gone or are going through physical therapy (which would be common for an injury) what kinds of exercises do you do for that? Surely your PT trainer encourages you to do your exercises at home as well…

Maria asks…

Is selling to close a call option the same as exercising the option at the strike price then selling it?

This has been confusing me for some time, any help would be appreciated. I can’t seem to tell if it’s the same as exercising the option then selling it, or if it’s just selling the option at the bid price. Which one is it? Thanks in advance.

imstayin answers:

Just to add to the other two answers (which are correct). There are basically three kinds of option selling.

If you own an option contract, then you “Sell to close” to exit your position without exercising. You are “closing” your position. You can set your price higher than the bid price with a limit order (what I usually do), altough it might not get filled right away.

This is distinguished from “Sell to open,” in which case you are basically shorting the option that you don’t own (selling it hoping that it decreases in value). In this case you would have to either buy the call option later or buy shares of the stock on the open market and then sell them to the option holder at the strike price of the option. If the strike price of the call option was higher than the price of the stock at expiration, then the contract would be worthless and you wouldn’t have to do anything.

You can also “Write a covered call” in which case you are selling a call option on stock that you already own. This is a beginner friendly strategy which I answered previously (see source).

Donna asks…

How can I stay motivated when it comes to exercising?

I’ve been dieting and exercising for two 7 weeks now. My body has changed tremendously. So far, I’ve lost 7lbs and probably like 4-5 inches in my waste line. But for some reason I’m starting to get a little lazy and bored with exercising. I’m still eating healthy and that’s never going to change. I’ve found this website called eat better america and it has changed my life as far as eating healthy but I need some sort of motivation when it comes to exercising. Any advise or motivation you give me will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

imstayin answers:

“I do not try to dance better than anyone else. I only try to to dance better than myself.” —Mikhail Baryshnikov

Baryshnikov was once considered the greatest ballet dancer n the world, but you don’t have to be the greatest at anything other than being YOU. Motivation comes from imagining yourself as the best you that you know, and all the benefits that accrue when you have reached this level. Imagine yourself frequently as lithe, lean, fit, especially before you go to sleep. Your subconscious mind will take over and what the subconscious believes, the body must follow.

Imagine all the benefits you experience when you are the best you that you can be. You feel the strength and flexibility coursing through you. You feel the admiration of others. Your very being lights up a room.

From there, goal setting is a must, to put foundations under your dreams. Without goals, dreams remain dreams. Take the advice of Baryshnikov, and don’t try to be fitter than anybody else but you. Each week, you should set your goals just a bit higher, continuing to try to beat yourself. If you walked fifteen miles the week before, go for seventeen the next week. It is important that your goals are achievable, yet not too easy. Motivation psychologists recognize the need for goals that are neither too easy nor too hard.

Make sure to reward youself for attaining goals. Then, go about the quiet work of resetting them. If you fail once in a while, just remember that failure only occurs when we give up, that failure is only temporary unless we throw in the towel.

Boredom with exercising can be cured by focusing on activities you truly enjoy. If you just hate running, for instance, why force yourself to run? Perhaps you are more a swimmer than runner. There are many ways to exercise produuctively, so pick the activities which bring you joy. Varying your routine to keep things fresh will help as well.

“People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily,” said Zig Ziglar, a renowned motivation expert. Read anything you can get your hands on wittten by Ziglar. Read something motivational every day, and you will soon find yourself becoming the person you want to be.

Your Questions About Exercising Heart Rate

Daniel asks…

Why does my heart rate go up easily?

I used to have an optimum 120-80 blood pressure. I’ve been smoking for a few weeks and at the same time meditating. I’ve noticed that sometimes even when I’m not working out my blood vessels pump more blood than before. When I exercise, the heart rate goes up very fast and makes me dizzy. Where is the problem?

imstayin answers:

You already know that smoking increases your blood pressure, so do whatever it takes to quite smoking. If exercise increases your blood pressure try going for walks outdoor. And maintaining a healthy diet, such as ‘The South Beach Diet’ By: Arthur Agatston M.D. Helps a great with maintaining a normal blood pressure.

And continue to meditate daily. Mindfulness meditation mainly has two purposes. The first step is to develop mental concentration. The second is to gain ‘insight’ into the nature of things through ‘mindfulness, awareness, vigilance and observation.’ Meditation is intended ‘to purify the mind’. It cleanses the thought process of what can be called psychic irritants, things like impatience, stress, anxiety, fear, anger, hatred, unforgiveness, resentment, etc. – things that keep us snarled up in emotional bondage, and produces traits like lovingkindness, patience, compassion, sympathetic joy, equanimity and wisdom. ‘It brings the mind to a state of tranquility and awareness, to a state of concentration and insight’.

Andrew Weiss teaches Mindfulness Meditation in his book: *”Beginning Mindfulness: Learning The Way of Awareness”. It teaches Walking Meditation, Lovingkindness Meditation, Mindfulness Meditation, Tonglin: the Art of Practicing Compassion and Mindfulness in Everyday Life.

Carol asks…

How do i maintain a low heart rate when exercising?

Im actually going to pass PE ( all my previous teachers dreams) (California State Standards), i failed the running test, ( they expected me to do it in 9 minutes, FFFFUUUUUU, im not that fat, and the alternative is the walking test, i wask three laps around a high school track, untimed, and then they check my heart rate, if its too high i fail, ( thats so shiat!! Dam you Schwarzenegger) . What can i do 2moro to maintain a low heart rate, as in breakfast, or pace, movement, etc. Thanks.
Walk*

imstayin answers:

You should have asked this two months ago. About all you can do is eat a banana the morning of the test. The potassium will help insure a normal heart rate.

Paul asks…

what is an acceptable recovery heart rate level five minutes after exercising?

imstayin answers:

Hi Paige!
Everyone is different, so I can’t say that I have an exact range for you, but I am 45, my max (at full out) heart rate is 160.
At 1 min: 135
2 Mins: 110
within 5 minutes My heart rate will be under 80.
Resting heart rate is under 50.

I am not overly fit, I am still 45 lbs overweight, but have lost 31 lbs in the last 13 weeks.

I have been doing high intensity interval training instead of cardio.

In other words, sprint for 45 seconds. Walk for 2 minutes, sprint for 45 seconds, walk for 2 minutes. Repeat that five times. I do this on an elliptical machine at the gym. You can do it at the high school track if you want. The goal is to absolutely hit the wall and then recover, then do it over. It is grueling, but not as grueling as 45 minutes of “jogging”.

I have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Last week, my cholesterol was measured to be 81, lowest in my life, possibly lower than anyone I know. Last Jan it was 180 on medication. I guess it isn’t high anymore.

Try the HIIT, it will train your body to recover.

Mary asks…

how does exercising affect your heart rate?

imstayin answers:

Before exercising – resting heart rate of 100-110.

3 months exercising and counting – resting pulse of 55.

Mandy asks…

What does a high heart rate mean?

My class did a science experiment to see how exercise affects heart rate. My normal heart rate was 100, and after exercise, it was 204. Everyone elses regular heart rate was from around 60-80, and after exercise was from around 150-180. My teacher said I should talk to a doctor, but I don’t know what it could mean.

imstayin answers:

A heart rate of 100, is a bit higher than normal 60-90beats per minute. Many things can make your heart beat higher:
illness, low grade fevers, excitement, caffeine, stimulants, over the counter cold medications, asthma inhalers, and dehydration. I wouldn’t be so concerned that I’d rush you to the doctor, but I would encourage you to drink more fluids, make sure your getting rest and eating appropriately and cutting back on stimulants..that’s red bull, monster, diet pills, coffee, coke, chocolate, hot chocolate, etc. Then recheck your heart rate again over a period of a week or so, I bet it comes down.

Your Questions About Exercising Heart Rate

Sandy asks…

what should my heart rate be when I’m exercising?

im 16 and I was on the elliptical and my heart rate got to 186.is that too high. if so what should it be. when it does get that high what should i do to lower it if i need to.

imstayin answers:

Yes, it is too high, a fast heart rate pumping means your heart is trying hard to send blood to body, and with heartrate that strong, heart failure is a real threat to you,

even when exercising you should not do fast exercising all of a sudden, let your body get accustomed to some physical work.

You can monitor your heartrate to know when you should stop.

Paul asks…

How does arrhythmia affect heart rate when exercising?

I have a non-life-threatening heart arrythmia, usually causing palpitations or rapid changes in heart rate with stress and caffine, but otherwise I rarely notice it. I also have rather low blood pressure, but not dangerously so. I am otherwise a healthy 24 yo female.

How does arrythmia affect heart rate when excercising? When I try to take my pulse, while keeping the same intensity, my heart rate will jump from 60bpm to 210bpm, but usually jumping between 80bpm to 190bpm, according to the machines. Are these accurate? Is my heart actually doing this or is the machine defective, because I do not feel much different at 80bpm than 200bpm! Is it dangerous?

imstayin answers:

An arrhythmia is a disturbed heart rhythm. Some arrhythmias don’t affect your overall health, while others are more serious.
They can be triggered by exercise, emotional stress, caffeine and nicotine.
If you have persistent arrhythmias, ask your doctor for a thorough medical examination.

Body practices such as yoga and exercise can be effective in treating arrhythmia.

Joseph asks…

Why is increasing your heart rate good during exercise, but not during stress?

Why is it considered healthy to increase your heart rate during cardiovascular exercise, but it’s considered unhealthy for your heart rate to be elevated due to stress?

imstayin answers:

It probably has something to do with the different chemicals released by the body under different emotional states. When we exercise, apparently our body releases feel good chemicals. When we are anxious or stress, we have more of chemicals that damages our system.

Linda asks…

Advantage of having increased heart rate during exercise?

What is the advantage of having an increased heart rate during exercise?
I dont really understand whether the heart pumps blood faster, or pumps more :/ thanksss

imstayin answers:

It does both. When you exercise, your skeletal muscles need much more oxygen, so they need more blood delivered faster. When you exercise it triggers a hormone in your brain, released into the blood, to cause your adrenal glands to produce more epinepherine and send it into your bloodstream. Epinepherine affects the pacemaker of your heart (the AV node),causing the heart to beat faster and to increase its stroke volume (the amount of blood pushed out of the heart with each beat). The result is a rise in your blood pressure, as the left ventricle pushes out more oxygenated blood faster and the right ventricle pushes more blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen and release CO2 and return it to the left side of the heart. The result is that blood is delivered to your muscles under higher pressure faster and highly oxygenated, facilitating the diffusion of oxygen from the blood to the muscle cells. The result is more oxygen to your muscle cells, allowing them to function more efficiently.

Michael asks…

What is and acceptable heart rate after 10 min’s of exercising?

need a lil help please =]

imstayin answers:

Can’t answer the question as asked. Don’t know your resting rate, max, what you’re doing for exercise, what kind of shape you’re in.

My normal resting rate is around 40bpm, max around 185 (I’m 56)

I try to get my rate up to the mid 130′s during a warmup run (or swim, or bike….) before I try anything fast or intense. This usually takes 10-15 minutes (1-2 miles running, 5 miles cycling, or 800 yards swimming).

Once I’m warmed up, the target heart rate depends on what I’m doing. For just a run of the mill long run or ride (2-4 hours), my heart rate is usually in the mid 150′s, occasionally as high as 170 on climbs or sprints.

Your range will be different. There is no magic number. It takes a few months of training with a heart rate monitor to figure out what it means to YOU.

Your Questions About Exercising Stock Options

Susan asks…

Why would a stock price INCREASE after a dividend payment?

Hint: It has something to do with exercising options I think

imstayin answers:

The payout of dividends generally has no impact on the price of a stock.

If a stock price increases after its dividend payment then it is due to changed investor sentiment. This could sometimes be related to an announcement such as an earnings report that coincides with the dividend.

Joseph asks…

Are American tax-payers considered owners of AIG/Citibank/etc.?

If so, can we terminate employment of certain miscreants ruining our “investment”? Can they be held accountable for their actions? Can we exercise stock options? Or did we just pay for their mistakes?

imstayin answers:

Q1. 85%

Q2. No, AIG is a international corp.

Q3. Only in an international court.

Q4. Not as yet.

Q5. We most likely have paid for the collective greed and mistakes.

Have a nice day.

Jenny asks…

Can I rollover the profit from a stock sale into a tax-deferred account?

I am going to be exercising some options at the company I work for and would like to roll the profit I make on the sale into a tax-deferred vehicle.

imstayin answers:

If you mean can you avoid paying taxes on that profit now by rolling it over into something, I don’t know any way to do that. I think that will be taxable income this year no matter what you do with the profits.

You can use that money, like any money, to contribute to an IRA which will make future growth tax-deferred (or tax-free if you can contribute to a Roth IRA), but that won’t do anything about your current taxable profit. Also, there’s a $4000 annual limit on IRAs ($5000 if you are 50 or over).

Charles asks…

Can you get scammed if you own options?

Is it possible to get scammed by owning options?

I own 1 contract for an option. Is it any-way possible that the seller of that contract to me could default on me when I am ready to exercise the stock?

Or basically there is a law or block against the 100 shares (1 contract) that we agreed upon? Since he already received the premium from me.
This is an individual account, and the options are for a private traded company like Mastercard.

imstayin answers:

If you are talking about options listed on a United States exchange, such as Mastercard, you are protected. The options contract is a legally binding contract and the writer (seller) is required to meet his obligation. He really does not have a choice, his brokerage will do it on his behalf. If the brokerage fails, or is otherwise unable to meet the obligation, the Options Clearing Corporation (OCC) will meet the obligation.

If you are talking about an over-the-counter privately negotiated options contract it is still a legally binding contract, but your protection if the writer defaults may be limited.

George asks…

About 2yrs. ago I bought stock (highly spec.) for $1.05, it split 2:1 and offered options… ?

…. options to purchase equal shares @ $1.00 which expire next month. The stock today is at a smoldering $0.07 (its a local mining start-up, so I see it as a couple hundred dollar lotto ticket) I’m fairly new to this kind a deal with of split, but I’m of the opinion that I should not exercise my options. Am I crazy here? :) Is there anyway I can make any money on these options somehow? I really think it is a stupid question, but wanted to double check there isn’t some kind of loophole that would put some kind of value to these options.

Your are my new hero if you prove that this was indeed a good question rather then wishful thinking. Thanks.

[In case anyone is curious, it is a mining startup co. that has had good news on several explatory drill holes on 2 of 3 claims. In the early 90's they started buying up a bunch of old claims, and the claims surrounding them, and now it is profitable to restart what's been shut down 15, 45, and 60 years. I'd hoped there would be a bubble/spike type bit of good news before the options expire, but it looks like I will have to wait for their 18 month time horizon for profitability. Its claims are up 9,000-12.000 ft. so winter isn't an ideal time for drilling. So thats the "lotto" ticket/fun aspect of my thoughts getting into this one.]

imstayin answers:

You’re right – don’t exercise them. Look at it this way. You could pay $100 for 100 shares by exercising the options. You could pay $7 for 100 shares on the market.

The only dumb question is the one you’re afraid to ask. :)

Your Questions About Exercising

Mark asks…

How can I figure out which type of exercising will be best for me?

I am exercising not to lose weight, but to get into better shape, and to feel better in general.

I wasn’t sure if I should do walking, jogging, or even yoga. Or a combination. Is there a website that maybe lists out what each exercise is good for, such as endurance, core strength, flexibility, etc. so I can decide what I should do? Or, do you have any suggestions for a type of exercise that just tones the whole body and gets you in better shape overall?

Thank you!

imstayin answers:

I just recently started working out with a personal trainer. I used to do cardio followed by strength training with light weights. I got good results. My goal however has never been to loose weight its always been to stay strong and maintain a healthy body. With the personal trainer i’ve reached different levels of fitness, we do whats called circuit training. I am working on gaining a bigger butt and stronger legs. He begins by doing dynamic warm up consisting of a lot of jumping kicking and sprinting and of course a core warm up. Following the warmup which leaves me gasping for air we do strength training. People have told me i look like i’ve lost weight however i’ve gained weight i think i just look more toned.

Maria asks…

How much of a difference will my body look in 3 weeks of exercising and eating healthy?

I’m not fat at all, 135 pounds at 5’4 with a medium frame. I used to be 120 pounds, but I’ve gained some weight over the last few months from not exercising and eating unhealthy.

I plan on returning to my exercise routine (usually consists of running 2-3 miles a day and pilates) and eating healthy.

Will I begin to see results in 3 weeks or less? Like I said I’m not fat at all, just a little chubby. I’m also 16 years old

imstayin answers:

Takes 6 weeks for noticeably good results, and within 3 weeks, you might see some changes. But dont lose momentum when u can see results quickly just keep it up.

Ruth asks…

Is it good to drink a smoothie like this after exercising? Best answer will be chosen asap?

I usally drink a smoothie made of:
Milk
Strawberries
Eggs
Banna

I drink this after exercising, is it a good protein smoothie? why why not?

imstayin answers:

Yes, it has protein and is good for you. Milk has calicuim and protein strawberried are like all fruits and are good for you, bannas have pottasium, and eggs are full of protein. By eggs i think you mean you put egg whites in smoothies not the yolk too, because the yolk is, in my opinion disgusting in a smoothie, and the egg whites are the part that contain most of the protein.

Hope I Helped

Lizzie asks…

Why do fat people keep eating and not exercising?

I understand that there wouldn’t be fat people (other than the ones that have medical problems or whatever) if they did exercise/eat healthy and the question answers itself, but what encourages someone to eat unhealthy and not do anything when they are obviously getting worse. I eat healthy and occasionally exercise and I am not fat… If I was fat though I would find it as a serious problem and start exercising more. It is getting annoying that there are tons of fat people in my area.

imstayin answers:

Because they don’t have the will/effort/motivation to put down the cheeseburger and go for a run, it’s harsh, but it’s not hard to drive by the wendy’s, rather than through it. There are people with conditions that are born like that and despite efforts can’t fix it, but the % is a lot smaller than the 64% of americans that are overweight, even though most use that as an excuse.

And it’s also much easier to sit on the couch, eat pizza, and watch tv all day, than hit the gym. I’ve been lifting and eating right for 2+ months and I still have to fight the urge to eat fast food and skip workouts. It’s about ambition, we all want instant gratification, but some of us are willing to avoid it for something better longterm, and others aren’t, I just deal with my stuff and let them have their junk food and laziness.

I try not to auto-judge every fat person I see, but it bothers me when people that are fat and lazy try to find the easy way out to look like someone that has worked hard for years. Also, like 95% of the girls my age are either fattys or anorexics >.<

William asks…

How and Why do people become obsessed with exercising?

I am SO NOT…. I’m trying to find ways to become disciplined and enjoy exercising regularly. I thought well some people are obsessed with it, so perhaps I could take some of their reasoning behind it and use it to get myself motivated. I’ve tried to get some exercise buddies….. but very few people I know exercise regularly.

imstayin answers:

The hardest part is getting started… Seriously… Once you’re in the groove and you see how good you feel from it that’s when the addiction kicks in.

I do yoga 2-4x a week and cardio every other day with light weight lifting… Now if I dont work out I feel a huge difference in my mood!

Your Questions About Exercising Stock Options

Robert asks…

Options Strategy: Long Straddle?

From Wikipedia about long straddles:

“For example, company XYZ is set to release its quarterly financial results in two weeks. A trader believes that the release of these results will cause a large movement in the price of XYZ’s stock, but does not know whether the price will go up or down. He can enter into a long straddle, where he gets a profit no matter which way the price of XYZ stock moves, if the price changes enough either way. If the price goes up enough, he uses the call option and ignores the put option. If the price goes down, he uses the put option and ignores the call option. If the price does not change enough, he loses money, up to the total amount paid for the two options. The risk is limited by the total premium paid for the options, as opposed to the short straddle where the risk is virtually unlimited.”

Okay, so I understand the concept. What I don’t get is, say the price went down. Okay, so you’d use a put option to sell the stock at a higher price than it’s worth. Great, that’s profit.

But when you do this, are you literally selling the stock and exercising the option(s), or simply selling the option(s)? And, in either of these situations, who is buying them from you?

imstayin answers:

When trading a long straddle (much like other spread trades) the trader does not intend to exercise the options. The idea on this strategy is that you get enough price movement one way or the other that the winning side of the trade makes enough profit to more than make up for the loss on the losing side of the trade. The winning option is sold for a profit and the losing option is either sold at a loss or expires worthless.

As far as who is buying them from you, it could either be another trader or a market maker.

John asks…

Selling Call Options, what happens after you sell it?

Let’s say I buy call options for $1 per contract with a strike price of $50. When the price goes up to $60, I sell the call options for $10, making a $9 gain per contract.

How does the process of selling this option work? If the new buyer decides to exercise these options later (let’s say when stock price hits $70) would I be obligated to provide the stock that the option guarantees even though I was not the original issuer and do not possess the stock?

Thanks

imstayin answers:

No. You’re simply selling “the right, but not the obligation, to buy” at $50. Once you sell that right, you no longer have anything to do and you’re not entitled to anything. This assumes of course that you’re selling “to close” which simply means your trading in the calls you owned for cash.

If you sold the call “to open” then you’d have an obligation to deliver stock.

Donald asks…

Stock option question?

I hate doing this because its cheating but ive been on this one for an hour, please help

X Corp has $160000, $2 stated value common stock authorized, 75% are issued, and of them 11000 are outstanding. on Dec 31, 2010 the Stock/Equity section revealed PIC in Excess of Stated Value was $416000 and R/E balance was $110,000. Treasury stock purchased at an average cost of $37.50/share

The 2011 transaction leading up to the entry in stuck on….

Feb 1 – sold 1500 shares newly issued $2 stated value common stock at $42/share
Mar 15 – declared cash div on common stock of $0.15/share payable April 30 to all S/H’s on as of Apr 1
Apr 15 – reacquired 200 shares of C/S for $43/share using cost method to account for Treasury stock
Apr 30 – paid dividends
Apr 30 – employees exercised 1000 options granted in 2006 under fixed stock option plan. when the options were granted each option entitled ea employee to purchase 1 share of c/s for $50/share. share price on grant date is $51/share. on apr 30 the market value was $55/share x issued new shares to employees. fair value of option at grant date was $6
May 1 – declared 10% stock dividend to S/H of record on May 7. Market price of C/S is $55/share on may 1 (assume that treasury shares do not participate in stock dividends)

i have all the entries right (the excel template tells me if its right or wrong) up until the May 1 transaction. I have the journal entries for this transaction inputted but for the life of me I cannot get the figures…

debit Retained Earnings
credit Stock Dividends Distributable
credit PIC in Excess of Stated Value – Common

I would appreciated it if someone could help me with the values??? thanks alot in advance

imstayin answers:

If all your other entries are correct, this should be simple.
..11,000 Shares of stock outstanding on Dec. 31, 2010
+ .1,500 Shares sold on Feb. 1
– ….200 Shares reacquired on Apr. 15
+…1,000 Shares issued on Apr 30
= 13,300 Shares outstanding as of May 1.
You would base the 10% stock dividend on 13,300 shares outstanding. This is what the journal entry should be.
Dr Stock Dividends 73,150 (13,300 x 10% x $55 market price)
Cr Stock Dividends Distributable 2,660 (13,300 x 10% x 42 stated value)
Cr Additional Paid-In Capital 70,490 (Difference between stated and market price)

Donna asks…

How much money is needed to buy put options in RIM stock?

I’d like to buy some put options in RIM stock. Please, I know about the risk and don’t need investment suggestions. I’m just curious about how much money I need (not including any margin) that I would need to buy enough that would potentially make a decent profit if exercised in the money. I know there’s a lot of relative terms in my description, but a decent amount of money in regards to this post would be around $200-$500. I also know it depends on the exercise price of the options, but try to work around that in your answer. I really appreciate the responses you provide and I will post back if more info is needed. Thanks!

imstayin answers:

How can you claim to know about options when you obviously has no idea how to read an options chain? One look at RIM’s options chain will give you plenty of options you can buy for $200 to $500 depending on your specific outlook and risk appetite.

Lizzie asks…

Why would a stock price INCREASE after a dividend payment?

Hint: It has something to do with exercising options I think

imstayin answers:

Well on ex div day, the share price usually drops by roughly the amount of the dividend, but if the share is trending up then it will continue to do so, and if the dividend payment has been higher than last year, then that will also attract more buyers.
